Office ergonomics - how do I set up an ergonomic office?

Office ergonomics - regulation

Nowadays, it is almost essential to use some kind of computer device when doing intellectual work. Sitting in an office can only be called easy on the surface, but in reality, countless factors can make it burdensome.

In terms of screen work, even in 2021, an EüM decree that entered into force in 1999 is decisive. Since then, however, there have been significant developments in computer technology, which have not been followed by legal regulations. Desktop computers were replaced by mobile devices and laptops, the so-called open office solutions, which presented employees with many other challenges.

The vast majority of employers ensure the conditions laid down in EüM Decree 50/1999 (XI.3.), i.e. adjustable chairs and tables are available, they strive to bring in plenty of natural light, so now I would like to say a few words about the most common problems among office workers.

Office ergonomics - what should be taken into account?

An office floor equipped with designer furniture looks beautiful if the employees cannot work comfortably and healthily in it.

Numerous aspects must be taken into account already during the planning of the building. If possible, the building's fresh air intake should not be located at the height of the exhaust pipe of the kitchen hood of the neighboring fast food restaurant.

It happens countless times that employees complain that the ventilation system blows in fresh air right above their desks, as a result of which they are forced to sit in a draft all day and have almost constant upper respiratory and joint ailments. In order to do this, they try to "plug" the opening in different ways. A mobile workplace can be a good solution for this, the advantage of which is that the employee can take a seat next to the table he likes, even changing it every day. Another solution is a plexiglass plate installed for the outlet of the ventilation system, which changes the path of the blown air, so that it does not flow directly to the person sitting below it.

It is also a common problem that some disturbing light source comes into the employee's peripheral vision, e.g. a ceiling light or the light of a security light. It is worth taking these factors into account when planning the preliminary placement of the tables, so we can save ourselves from a lot of annoyance later on.

Huge glass surfaces may also seem like a good idea, but in this case you should not forget about adequate shading and examining the orientation of the building. In the heat of the summer, a fully glazed, south-facing office can become unbearably hot in no time, even with the use of air conditioning. Another problem is that poorly positioned tables can cause significant reflections and image shake on screens, even with shading.

When using laptops, it must be taken into account that looking down for a long time (hanging the neck) can cause harmful effects, including neck pain, headaches, and spinal disorders. It is definitely recommended to use a laptop platform, which can be used to raise the monitor to a sufficient height, thereby avoiding permanent health damage.

If possible, provide additional peripheral units next to your laptop (mouse, keyboard and second monitor).
